What is a Tech Pack?
A “Tech Pack” is a set of design or style sheets which contain all the necessary specifications to construct a garment or a sewn product for prototype or production purposes. Tech pack formats can vary greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer; some are in an Excel spreadsheet format and some are in a template format that can be completed by hand. Some companies use PLM and PDM. There is a new technology called web centric PDMs.
What are the necessary elements of a Tech Pack?
A “Tech Pack” must list all the materials and components of any specific garment or sewn product on a worksheet. The elements of a tech pack should include separate sheets for fabrics, trims, color ways, measurements, grade rules, and all related vendor information. At a minimum each tech pack should have the style number, season, size range, block number, specs, flat sketch, fabrics, and colors per style. These documents are generated and completed by the technical designer and finalized with merchandisers.
Why do I need a Tech Pack?
The “Tech Pack” provides the manufacturer with a detailed “road map” on how to make your sewn prototype, sales samples, or production. Every detail from the style number, season, thread color, embroidery placement, and vendor information is clearly identified in a tech pack. Many may contain specs and garment measurements, layouts for artwork, full color or black and white flat sketches, and information for labels and hangtags.
What are the benefits of creating a Tech Pack?
Manufacturing a sewn product is similar to putting a puzzle together; you are presented with different shapes, sizes, and colors and it has to put together and finished just like the reference sample provided. A tech pack will tell you everything you need to know to construct the pieces and if followed correctly you will have the desired product. Each garment or sewn product must be accompanied by a separate tech pack and a reference sample. A manufacturer will not handle your production order unless you meet the basic requirements and provide them with a tech pack.
A tech pack can help you to stay organized and focused.
A tech pack can help with patternmaking, grading, calculating yields and costing.
A tech pack also confirms that you have provided all necessary information to the factory.
A tech pack will insure the accuracy of the final product.
